Reformatting Hard Drive Mac -> windows vista?

I have a 500 GB External hard drive from Iomega. I used it to back up files from my imac (did not use time machine). since i have gone to college, and i had to purchase an HP laptop for engineering, I have not been able to open and erase the files from my external because it is not recognized as a drive that it can alter. It knows it is there, and i can change settings, but I can’t open it in any window. I wanted to just reformat it all together for Windows Vista even though it is currently set up for Mac leopard.

How do i reformat my hard drive for my HP computer and reapportion its memory to my media?

Best external hard drive for an iMac?

I’m looking for an a cheap (sub 5) external hard drive used for back ups and some videos for my mac. I don’t need anything over 250 gb.
How about the Iomega Prestige 500 GB ?
I found what I was looking for. The Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500 GB for Mac was perfect

I just got a new 15 inch MacBook Pro.

I had 13 inch mac book with a 200 gb harddrive. It was destroyed by water, but the harddrive was intact, as was it’s data, so I had it put into an external enclosure.

Now that I have my new macbook, what I want to do is move all my data from the external hard drive into my new macbook.

I have a big iTunes library, and I want it exactly set up like the old one, playlists etc. In addition I want to deauthorize the old machine and authorize the new one.

I also have a lot of photos in iPhoto, and I want it set up like the old one with albums etc.

I have an iPhone 3G and I want to get it all set up too.

And when all that data is in the computer correctly, I want to use the external hard drive as my time machine back up (do I need to delete the old info so the info now on my new macbook can be backed up?)

Here is what I have done so far:

I have gotten it all registered, all the user names all set up
my mobile me is all set up
safari all set up.

It is ready to go except for the data I had on my old computer, configured exactly as before.

How do I accomplish this?

PS I tried to do it once, think I messed up and reinstalled the OS and application software.

I’m looking into buying a Western Digital 500 GB My Book Studio Edition External Hard Drive for my 1st gen. macbook.

I want to use it to backup EVERYTHING on my mac (which has a max capacity of 60 gb), as well as to store stuff (like movies, pictures, and music) that won’t fit on my small internal hard drive.

Will I be able to use this hard drive to back-up my files AND store extra files that aren’t on my internal hard drive or would I just be able to set it up for one or the other?

So…

Notes:
I’m using a Macbook Pro.
I had about 290 movies and tv shows.

I was trying to move all of my movies on to my external hard drive and I copied all of them (took two hours) on there. Then I deleted all but three of them off my computer and emptied the trash. I then look back at my hard drive’s files and they aren’t there!!! The only thing that was there was the 3 files.

But I also have time machine saved to update my external hard drive. It did and I can see the previous computer times/events/whatever you want to call it. I go to Hard drive>backups.backupdb>My Mac Book Pro>2010-05-04>Macintosh HD>Users>Me>Movies which only shows my iMovie library. I do the same thing but with Music>iTunes>iTunes media>movies to which only one file shows up!!!!

Please, please help me.

I bought a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition external hard drive. It says its compatible with time machine on the iMac but, when I try to set it up it says, " AirPort Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices. Make sure the Apple wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again." I have it plugged in and it is sitting right by my computer so, I know that’s not the problem. I just want to use the hard drive as a back up so, does anyone know what I can do?
I’ve tried time machine and time capsule. Neither will let me back up my files.

I have a 500gb western digital My book studio for use as backup of photos on my Mac G5. There are two copies of everything that I backed up because I mistakenly set up 2 backup programs. The drive is now full and I can’t back anything else to it (it says I have 9 gb space left). I deleted a lot of stuff by moving from the external hard drive to the trash and clearing the trash but the hard drive still says I only have 9 gb of space left. How do I free up that space that came from all the files I deleted? It seems like reformatting will erase everything and I don’t want to do that if I can help it. Any help (step by step if possible because I am computer illiterate) even if I do just have to reformat the whole thing will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I do not have Windows. This Mac is before the Intel chip so PC stuff can’t be run on my computer. Like I said I do not know much so if Windows also applies to my Mac then where is it?

I want to update my iTunes / iPod Touch software.
In order for my to install the update it wants to back up everything on my iPod to my computer.
My computer does not have enough free space, so I cannot install the update.
How can I have it back up to my external hard drive instead of my computer.
(I already have my external plugged in and iTunes gives me no option to use it instead)
